We had the pleasure to meet U.S. Army Veteran Geoff Waterman. A native of Midland, Texas, Geoff grew up playing every sport in the catalog, favoring baseball and hockey. He graduated High School in 2006 and worked a few odd jobs before deciding to join the Army in 2009 as a 13 bravo cannon crew member. Geoff completed his training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and spent five years at Howitzer Battery, 2nd Squadron, 3d Calvary Regiment in Fort Hood, Texas. He completed two deployments: Iraq in 2010-2011 and Afghanistan in 2014. During the Iraq deployment, he was injured in an IED blast. Geoff recalls being in the gunner’s hatch and suffered a traumatic brain injury as well as a knee injury.
After Fort Hood, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Field Artillery Regiment in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and served as a Section Chief and Gunnery Sergeant. He was the winner of the Battalions Top Gun competition two years in a row. Geoff was selected for recruiting duty and served at the Nashville Recruiting Battalion from July 2018 until the end of his military career in November 2022. He is the recipient of a Purple Heart, five Army Commendation Medals, eight Army Achievement Medals, The Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, The Afghanistan Service Medal with Campaign Star, and The Combat Action Badge.
Geoff is happily married to his wife Shawna and has three boys Cayden, 15, Carson, 11, and Colten, 10. He currently works full time in operations for an oil and gas company. Geoff is also attending school full time pursuing a degree in welding technology with an end goal of completing his bachelors degree in Petroleum Engineering. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, golf, and watching my kids play sports. In Geoff’s words: “I want to thank The Zellner Foundation for helping me get out on the course more often. I grew up playing golf on and off. However, since exiting the military golf has been a great stress reducer and form of therapy for me. Before receiving the set of clubs provided by the foundation, I had to rent a set every time I played. These clubs will allow me to practice with my own set and save money. I cannot thank everyone enough for what you have provided me. Your support and what you do for Veterans is selfless and greatly appreciated.” We salute Geoff for his service to our nation and appreciate his kind words about our mission.
