We had the pleasure of meeting Roberto C Cuartero, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, his wife of twenty-two years, Jennifer, and his youngest son Raphael. Jennifer received her new golf clubs and first lesson from coach Tom Murtagh at Travis Fulton Studio. Five days later, it was Roberto and Raphael's turn at TPG Performance Golf Center with golf professional Chris Yeager.

"It brings you closer to God"

Roberto served as a Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Weapons Specialist in the Marine Corps for seven years in the '90s. Even though Roberto applied to our programs for his wife and son, we surprised him with a set after we learned that his oldest son took his golf clubs with him to college. It was a late birthday present.
Roberto gave us a very inspirational response when we asked why he considers golf a good sport for mental health:

"My first job when I was fourteen was on a golf course. I used to be there at 4:00 a.m. and nobody else was there. I always remember how peaceful and how beautiful it was to see the sunrise over the golf course. To see the squirrels and all the other animals come out. Everything else disappears when you are on a golf course. You don't think about your problems. It brings you closer to nature, and anytime you are closer to nature, it brings you closer to God."

Roberto founded Gracie Barra Jacksonville and has trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 20 years. He holds a Black Belt 3rd Degree in BJJ Rank. As Mixed Martial Arts coach, he has trained over 100 amateur and professional athletes in professional fighting careers in leagues like the UFC, Bellator, PFL, and Combat Night; amassing an 83% winning percentage and 85% finish rate over 15 years.

Saluting Roberto C Cuartero

We salute Roberto for his service to our nation and for using the leadership and mentoring skills learned in the Marine Corps to train young men and women in this demanding discipline. We can't wait to see The Cuartero Family on the golf course together!
