We are incredibly honored to provide the Will of Iron Golf Program to military veteran couples like Kerry Meldrum (U.S. Navy) and Scott Fichter (U.S. Marine Corps). They both received new golf sets and private lessons.

Healing Together

There is something truly special about watching partners show up for one another, grow stronger together, and walk the journey of healing side by side. From learning the fundamentals of golf to participating in friendly tournaments, every aspect foster teamwork and communication. These activities not only provide opportunities for fun and relaxation but also create lasting memories and deepen connections. Their bond, strength, and commitment to each other inspire everything we do.

Kerry shared the following story: "Kerry Meldrum from Illinois here—born and raised in a small farming community where “traffic” usually meant getting stuck behind a tractor and everybody knew your business before you did. I’ll be honest, I put off writing this for a few days because talking about myself isn’t exactly my favorite thing—but I figured I’d give it a shot.

I also come from a military family—mostly Army—but you can’t pick your relatives, so I went Navy. Right out of high school, I became a Seabee and spent 20 years in, a mix of active duty and reserve, with deployments to Rota, Spain; Kuwait; and Djibouti. It was an incredible experience and definitely shaped who I am today. Like a lot of veterans, I deal with PTSD from my time in service, and I’m always looking for healthy ways to manage anxiety and stay grounded.

That’s actually part of what brought me to golf. Now, I didn’t exactly grow up around the game. In fact, my dad once got kicked off a golf course for wearing boots—so that should tell you everything you need to know about my golf roots. I’ve never played a full round myself, just made a few trips to Topgolf (which I’m pretty sure only half counts), but recently I picked up some clubs and started hitting the driving range.

Turns out, I love it. There’s something about it that helps me slow things down and clear my head—so I’m really looking forward to getting some lessons and seeing where this goes. Hopefully with fewer ejections than my dad."

And Scott shared his: "Scott Fichter is a Jacksonville, Florida native, former United States Marine, and lifelong competitor who has spent most of his life doing anything that involves speed, impact, or the potential for injury. After enlisting in the Marine Corps in 2005, he served as an 1833 Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV) Crewman—“tracks”—and completed two deployments to Ramadi and Fallujah. He rose to the rank of Sergeant (E-5), proving he could lead Marines in high-pressure situations.

Before, during, and after his military career, Scott has played just about every sport imaginable—beach volleyball, softball, baseball, skateboarding, street hockey—you name it. He still owns his original BMX bike and will absolutely remind you that he “can still do tricks”

In a shocking twist, Scott has never actually golfed. Not even once. But that hasn’t stopped him from confidently stepping into the world of golf, fully expecting to figure it out faster than everyone else. With combat-tested nerves, natural athleticism, and a complete disregard for proper technique, Scott is prepared to approach golf the same way he’s approached everything else in life: full send.

Fore warning—he may not know the rules, but he’s definitely keeping score… his way."

Saluting Kerry Meldrum & Scott Fichter

We salute Kerry and Scott for their faithful service to our nation.

We look forward to seeing them enjoy time together and healthy competition. Life is more beautiful with the game of golf.
